The ITN Lifecycle workstream operated between 2019 – April 2025. The aim of the ITN Lifecycle workstream was to improve the quality and performance of insecticide-treated nets by addressing gaps in lifecycle management and aligning stakeholders around performance-related issues.
Through the Raising the Floor initiative and our collaborations with Tropical Health, NIRI, and CHAI, we identified systemic challenges, such as outdated bed net specifications and inconsistent performance data, and supported the development of new, standardized guidelines. This work not only targeted improvements in ITN effectiveness but also laid the foundation for broader quality frameworks across other vector control products.
The Resistance to Damage (RD) Score project at I2I has focused on strengthening the physical durability of ITNs by integrating evidence-based performance metrics into globally accepted bed net specifications.
In partnership with NIRI, TropicalHealth and CHAI, I2I has driven the development of durability standards through rigorous data analysis and coordinated advocacy with manufacturers, procurers, policymakers, and country programs. This work sought to incentivize better product design, ensure ITNs are fit for purpose, and strengthen the evidence linking laboratory metrics to field performance and overall cost-effectiveness. This work will transfer to IVCC under the leadership of Frank Mechan and Julie Ann Tangena in June 2025.
The Post Market Data Collection (PMDC) Toolkit was finalised in 2025 with the aim to bring structure and coherence to ITN post-market data collection by aligning stakeholder efforts, reducing duplication, and improving the utility of data for both global and country-level decision-making. I2I worked closely with partners to develop consensus-based recommendations for data collection, analysis, and use, thus ensuring that post-market activities not only support product quality and innovation but also meet the operational needs of endemic countries. This initiative addressed a critical gap in the current ITN lifecycle by enabling more informed procurement and regulatory decisions.
The “Raising the Floor” initiative was established in 2022 and was a multi-sectoral partnership set up by I2I and CHAI to map the key drivers of ITN performance across net lifespan and systematically resolve challenges affecting ITN performance.
Raising the Floor was established to create a system that incentivised continuous innovation of high quality, higher performing ITNs.
A Convening on Raising the Floor on Nets was held in Liverpool in 2022, and brought together partners from across the vector control spectrum to discuss the quality and performance of ITNs.
